Corfu Old Town is an enchanting mixture of Byzantine and Venetian architecture. Small alleys lead onto a broad Esplanade, much of which is a large park that is perfect for children. Meanwhile, a variety of churches and museums invite further exploration. One of the top attractions is the church of Saint Spyridon, famous as the repository of the relics of the island's patron saint.
The one-time home of Lawrence Durrell, novelist brother of the naturalist Gerald Durrell, the White House is now a restaurant. Largely unchanged since the Durrell family lived on the island in the 1930s, it offers a rare glimpse into the Corfu of "My Family and Other Animals". As well as a very good menu, diners can enjoy swimming and snorkelling off the little beach below the restaurant.
Located close to the island's airport and a little south of Kanoni peninsula, this monastery is on an islet connected to the mainland by a stone walkway. It is one of Corfu's most iconic places, although the best views are to be enjoyed from the mainland. It also lies near to Pontikonissi (Mouse) Island, which is another place that may be familiar to Durrell-aficionados.
Widely regarded as one of Corfu's best beaches, Paleokastritsa attracts crowds for good reasons. Although the main beach is small, it is surrounded by several others. With its beautiful harbour, monastery, and dramatic backdrop of olive groves, the setting is incomparable. A wide variety of tavernas, bars, and restaurants ensure that visitors are never short of somewhere to sit, eat, and enjoy the views. Nearby La Grotta is a tiny cove down a series of steps that is a famous island beauty spot.
An ideal excursion for families wanting a taste of Corfu before all its visitors arrived, Old Perithia is a "Heritage Protected" village and thought to be the oldest surviving example of the island's original mountain villages. Dating back to the fourteenth century, it was once a hideaway from pirate attacks. Its cobbled streets are more peaceful nowadays and its inhabitants very welcoming to visitors. It is best reached by car.
