Accommodations in the Maldives: private apartments, studios, rooms
The Maldives is the quintessential dream vacation: relaxing on the beach with a cocktail, exploring the marvelous seabed, swimming in never-so-clear waters--now that's a dream that could come true!Originals and History of the Maldives
It is believed that prior to 1500 BC the archipelago was uninhabited. The Portuguese arrived first and conquered the territory in 1558, but were driven out in 1573. The sultanate was independent until 1887, when it became a British protectorate. The Maldives gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 while in 1968, the sultanate was proclaimed a Presidential Republic. From 1978 to 2008, a single president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, ruled, creating a totalitarian regime with tight control of the media. In 2003 Amnesty International published a report on human rights violations perpetrated by President Gayoom's regime. Elections were held on November 16, 2013, and against the odds, Abdulla Yamin half-brother of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom won.
Flora and Fauna
All the islands of the Maldives are surrounded by acoral reef, which is the richest ecosystem in the world. The waters of the Maldives are a large aquarium that preserves such rich marine flora that it is one of the main attractions of the archipelago; there are as many as 200 types of coral and more than 1,000 species of fish. The terrestrial fauna is less diverse. One of the most common inhabitants of the islands is the crab, but reptiles are also present in significant numbers , including the graceful geckos. All the islands are covered with clusters of coconut palms, banana trees, breadfruit trees, papayas, mango trees and even lime trees. Also interesting is the ecosystem that forms among the mangroves, which consist of "floating trees" on swamps, whose roots stick out of the waters, forming a tangle.
The capital, Malé
The capital is Malé, has 104,000 inhabitants and is the largest city in the Maldives. Malé has no beaches, but is dominated by imposing buildings and paved streets. In the more commercial area there are colorful markets including costume jewelry, clothing, gifts as well as various fish and fruit and vegetable markets, where one can find exotic fruits and the strangest fish in the archipelago. The Islamic Center is the city's most architecturally important monument with the wonderful golden dome of the mosque. The center also houses the Islamic library, with offices and conference room.Opposite the mosque is the Mulee-aage, a palace built in the early 1900s with beautiful wrought-iron gates and interior gardens that houses the presidential offices. The National Museum is located in the old building formerly used as the sultan's palace, has an English-colonial style, and is arranged on three floors. On display inside are thrones, weapons, ceremonial vestments, and headdresses of the various sultans who have ruled the archipelago.
Resorts
The local economy lives almost entirely on the large numbers of tourists who land in the archipelago every day to vacation in luxurious resorts, placed one on each small islet: there are more or less a hundred in all. The range of resorts is truly remarkable and can be grouped into three categories: the resorts intended mainly for those who practicedive with houses on the reefs are truly spectacular; the resorts for families which are very spacious facilities with all kinds of amenities; and the resorts intended mainly for thejet set and honeymooners with sophisticated décor, exotic food in villas on the water, accessible only by rowboats. Then there are the bungalows on the water quite atmospheric in that they are built on poles above the lagoon but far from the resorts, with little privacy, and it is impossible to sleep when the sea is rough. The Atolls
The atoll of Ari is considered one of the most beautiful in the Maldives. Located in the west, it stretches 55 miles. It consists of 50 islands divided into the northern and southern parts. Here the islands are protected by oval reefs with an average depth of 180 to 240 feet with a mud and sand bottom. More than 20 islands are occupied by luxury resorts and villages, such as those at Ari Beachand Maayyafushi.Other atolls considered among the most beautiful one is Baa with 13 uninhabited islands and 5 resorts, accessible by seaplane while the atoll of Malè has the highest concentration of resorts .In the southern part of the atoll are the popular diving spots while the eastern part has areas suitable for surfers.
Sports
The most popular sports are diving and snorkeling. At the diving centers of each resort it is possible to approach this discipline, and obtain (subject to physical fitness) an "open water" license; many also offer a free trial in the pool or lagoon. The inner side of the reef facing the lagoon is ideal for less demanding dives in shallow water. For those already familiar with scuba tanks, the possibilities are endless, and cruises prove an excellent alternative to staying on an island. Night dives have a special charm in fact one is amazed by the natural luminescence of plankton, not visible during the day, and the creatures that sleep in crevices and others that come out to hunt.Curiosities
The national flower is the pink colored rose (Rosa polyantha) while the national tree is the coconut palm.In Malé, houses along the streets are not identified by numbers as is customary in our parts, instead almost all buildings have a unique name that allows them to be distinguished, either in English or in the local Thaana alphabet.
