What to Know Before You Go on Your City Break to Venice

What to Know Before You Go on Your City Break to Venice

Based on an extensive canal network, getting around Venice, which is spread over the Italian mainland and multiple islands, is truly something else. Here's what to know.

  1. Getting Around

From the airport, a bridge will connect you to Venice proper by bus or taxi. You can also reach the main island via water bus. From there, the main way to get around is by a boat service known as the vaporetto. This will connect you between the main island and the smaller surrounding ones, such as Murano. Venice is a compact city, however, so while it's fun to take a water taxi or gondolas, you can explore much of it on foot.

  2. Use a Paper Map

As a traveller these days, it's probably been a while since you used an actual map. That said, many visitors report getting lost when using their phones' GPS systems, ending up in a cul-de-sac far from their destination. This isn't a huge city and so using a paper map is actually a very easy way to navigate.

  3. Finding the Best Ice Cream

Italy is famous for delicious gelato. If you want the most authentic, delicious flavours, look out for products that don't have extremely vivid colours. Real gelato will look like crushed fruit, rather than bright red, and pistachio shouldn't be neon green.

Top Must-Sees During Your Venice City Break

Top Must-Sees During Your Venice City Break

Discover some of the best landmarks in gorgeous Venice.

  • 1. St Marks's Square

The Piazza San Marco is the city's main square, where you'll find St Mark's Basilica, Venice's main cathedral. Take some time to stroll around this gorgeous 12th century square, perhaps buying some bird seed from the vendors and letting the pigeons flock to you. Arrive early to enter the basilica. It opens at 9:30am, or 2:00pm on Sundays and holidays, and the queue gets big quickly. Be sure to have your knees and shoulders covered.

  • 2. Doge's Palace

The doges were the rulers of Venice when it existed as an independent republic. Here, you can see where they lived, and admire unique Venetian Gothic architecture and magnificent works of art housed in the chambers.

  • 3. Murano

Take a trip to this island, famous for its glasswork. You can buy souvenirs, such as small glass-blown animals, or splash out on sublime works of art. The statues dotting the streets and storefronts are wonderful to admire, too.
