What to Know Before You Go on Your City Break to Prague

What to Know Before You Go on Your City Break to Prague

Prague is a friendly city with an easy to navigate central district. Here are some tips on what to expect from your visit.

  1. Districts

Most of the best historic sights are around the Castle district. Unsurprisingly, this zone houses the hilltop Prague Castle, where you will get superb views over the city. The immediate surrounding area is known as the lesser town, with many more of the town's oldest buildings. The old town is wonderful for getting lost in charming, narrow streets. While the so-called new town is somewhat more modern, it was still established in the 14th century!

  2. Transport

If you are staying a little out of town or want to explore the lesser-known areas of Prague, you can hop on the tram, bus or metro to get around. Taxis are also affordable and are ideal for travelling to and from the suburbs. City centre traffic makes walking or public transport the easiest option in central Prague.

  3. Weather

Summers in Prague tend to be slightly warmer than in London. Expect the thermometer to hit the mid to high 20s° in July and August. Winter often sees the city blanketed in snow, adding a majestic touch to an already enchanting destination. The Christmas markets at Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square are very traditional and well worth checking out.

Top Must-Sees During Your Prague City Break

Top Must-Sees During Your Prague City Break

Get out and explore these fantastic sights on a city break in Prague.

  • 1. Prague Castle

The jewel of the historic quarter, dates from the 9th century. This is the official residence of the Czech president and you can tour the interior of the castle to see its many grand chambers in architectural styles ranging from Roman to Gothic.

  • 2. Charles Bridge

As you cross between the old town and the new town, you can pause to watch traditional street performers. The surrounding area is great for views across the River Vltava.

  • 3. Prague Astronomical Clock

Hanging on the wall of the town hall, a beautiful building located in the old town, this curious timepiece is one of Prague's most famous attractions. It dates from Medieval times and shows the Earth's position in relation to the zodiac signs, as well as when the sun sets and the current phase of the moon. It's an unusual and remarkable piece of craftsmanship that's well worth stopping to admire.
