What are the top sights in Dublin?

Dublin's top sights

When visiting Dublin, be ready to dive into its incredible history. There are several wonderful museums featuring local history and culture, like Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison which tells of Ireland’s interesting past, and the National Museum of Ireland, with its fascinating archaeology branch.

Don't miss the immersive experience at the Guinness Storehouse, a brewery presentation of Ireland’s most famous beer, which includes tastings and a rooftop bar.

If history isn't your thing, visit the green, sprawling Phoenix Park, home to the Dublin Zoo, or even the beautiful National Botanic Gardens, the inner city’s link to nature.

Where are the unique attractions in Dublin?

Finding a nice place to stay in Dublin is not as easy as you might think. While there are many hotels and hostels in this capital city, it's easy to get caught up in the international atmosphere and thus leave Dublin without really getting a taste of Irish culture. A good way to experience Irish life is to stay in a typical apartment, inhabited by real Dubliners.

Did you know?

  • Nearly half of Dublin's population is under 35 years old.
  • Phoenix Park is the largest park in Europe.
  • The founder of Guinness, Arthur Guinness, had originally planned to locate his brewery in Wales. It was only after a refusal from the Welsh that he decided to expand his business to
  • The author of Dracula, Bram Stoker was born in Dublin. It is said that the name Dracula comes from the Irish word 'droch ola' - bad blood.
  • The oldest Irish pub, The Brazen Head, is located in Dublin and opened in 1198.

Dublin, the city

Dublin is a lively and vibrant city at the center of Irish life. It is the European city with the highest rate of tourist growth. Dublin also offers a multitude of activities. Dublin's nightlife is legendary and a visit to Temple Bar, Dublin's main pub and bar area, is highly recommended. We highly recommend visiting the popular tourist attractions that will allow you to gain an appreciation for the Irish way of life. A guided tour of the Guinness Brewery is the main tourist attraction we recommend in Dublin. Located just west of the center, the Guinness building showcases the history of the "black stuff" and highlights the various marketing campaigns of the Guinness brand over the years. At the end of the tour, you are rewarded with a pint of Guinness to enjoy in the Gravity Bar, a panoramic bar with stunning views of Dublin and the Wicklow Mountains. We also recommend visiting Chester Beatty Library, which has a fabulous collection of books, manuscripts and drawings from Beatty's personal collection. The city is dotted with great parks - Phonenix Park is huge and home to the Dublin Zoo. St Stephens Green is a great place to relax after an afternoon of shopping on nearby Grafton Avenue.

Irish Cuisine

Here are some Irish dishes we recommend during your stay:The Breakfast Roll It doesn't get more Irish than the Breakfast Roll. This little snack includes all the classic elements of a fried breakfast but is served in a French baguette. This snack is perfect to munch on during a day of sightseeing!
Seafood Chowder - Irish waters are rich in fish and the Irish really know how to cook them. Be sure to try this hearty soup often served with some soda bread, an Irish bread leavened with baking soda. It's simply delicious!
Irish Stew - served anywhere and best enjoyed in a bar with a pint of Guinness.
Irish brands - a special mention for the various Irish brands. Barry's Tea and Lyon's tea rival the special breakfast tea brands. Ballymaloe's "relish" is a rich tomato and spice sauce served with cheese. It is also widely used in cooked dishes. Be sure to save room in your suitcase to bring back some of these Irish products!

Dublin Nightlife

Dublin is famous for its wide selection of bars. This city offers a wide range of options when it comes to enjoying a pint of Guinness or an "Irish coffee". South of the city center, we recommend visiting Bernard Shaw, located on Richmond Street. This Irish bar successfully recreates the raucous atmosphere of Western Ireland and the hedonistic nightlife of Galway. You'll find a double-decker bus in the "Beer Garden" - hop aboard and enjoy some tasty Italian pizza! We also recommend visiting The Porterhouse, located in the heart of the Temple Bar area. This bar serves its own homemade beer. It is really tasty! Also try the Oyster Stout - the house version of Guinness but brewed with oysters!

Off the beaten path

If you like to explore, Dublin has many bars, stores and sights to discover in less touristy corners. The Dublin Flea Market takes place on the last Sunday of every month. It is located southwest of the city center on Newmarket Street. The market has many food and bric-a-brac stalls. The coffee there is always very good too. The Glasnevin Botanical Garden is free to enter and contains over 20,000 species of plants including many rare specimens. Take the 13a, 19 or 134 bus from downtown Dublin.

Getting around

Dublin Airport is about 30 minutes from the city center. Bus transfers are very regular. We recommend not taking a cab - the trip from the airport to the city center is the 12th most expensive cab ride in the world! Ferries also run between Dublin and Wales. A Sail & Rail ticket costs £35 and will take you by train from Dublin to any part of the UK. As for transportation in Dublin's inner city, two streetcar lines serve the areas north and south of the River Liffey. Numerous bus routes serve all major tourist attractions. Dublin's city center is fairly compact, so you can get around on foot. Dublin is very well connected with other Irish cities such as Sligo, Galway and Cork.
What are the must-see attractions in Dublin?

Day trips from Dublin

Step out from your apartment hotel in Dublin's city centre, and hop on a train to the historic seaside town of Bray. Take the picturesque Cliff Walk to nearby Greystones and soak up County Wicklow's dramatic coastal scenery. Then, return to Bray for a pint in The Harbour Bar, once voted as the ‘Best Bar in the World’ by Lonely Planet.

If you have some extra time on your hands, Kilkenny is a must-visit. Known as ‘The Marble City’, you can visit the town's famous Kilkenny Castle, an imposing 12th-century Norman fortification, or marvel at the stunning stained-glass windows of St. Canice's Cathedral. No trip to Kilkenny would be complete without a pint of Smithwick's, an ale that predates the iconic Guinness.
