Hong Kong's distinctive tall buildings clustered around the harbour are home to several holiday apartments, while the southern side of the island is where you'll find larger properties, some with sea views or pools. Where are the unique attractions in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong can compete with other metropolises such as London and New York because of the opportunities it offers, the fervent 24-hour activity and the latest fashionable attractions, but locals feel that the soul of Hong Kong is in truth more comparable to Sicily. There is plenty to do and see in Hong Kong, and plenty of hotels and hostels are located in the heart of the city. Apartments and vacation homes are an alternative option available to you, allowing you to see neighborhoods you would not normally have the opportunity to visit. What is there to do in Hong Kong? We recommend visiting Victoria Peak, a famous viewpoint from where you will understand why Hong Kong's skyline is compared to that of New York City. The Nan Lian Gardens are another of Hong Kong's most famous attractions and are considered among the city's most beautiful areas. They consist of ornamental gardens with rock arrangements, wooden structures, and streams, and provide a corner of serenity away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong.

Notable Facts

  • Three-quarters of Hong Kong city is rural area: there are 24 parks in addition to hills, forests and reservoirs.
  • There is no surprise then that the remaining quarter of the city is so densely populated!
  • Hong Kong's population consumes three times the world average amount of tea, which amounts to 3 pounds per person!
  • Hong Kongers are smart: the city has an average IQ of 107.

History of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known as "the crossroads of the world" where Eastern culture meets Western culture. Its history is unique and its future bright: today's Hong Kong is the result of the assortment of 5,000 years of Chinese tradition with more than 150 years of colonial influence. Hong Kong consists of four distinct areas: the Caolun Peninsula, Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and the Peripheral Islands. Hong Kong is generally perceived and described as a city, although in truth it is an archipelago of 260 islands unevenly distributed on the sea. Most of the inhabitants live in the Caolun area, and there you will find much to do and see.
Hong Kong was claimed by the British in 1842, back in the days when it consisted of only a few fishing villages, and was returned to China in 1997, but the years of colonial rule made it a prosperous international metropolis. Evidence of colonial rule is still visible everywhere, not least in the architecture of downtown where you will find many British-style buildings. Today Hong Kong has a population of over 7 million people and is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Hong Kong's 4 urban areas are very diverse, and you may find yourself strolling along an avenue in Caolun or on a deserted beach in one of the Peripheral Islands.

Alternative Routes

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some places in Hong Kong that are hardly mentioned in guidebooks. Hong Kong has many faces, and it would be a shame not to leave the beaten path of tourists to see lesser-known areas. For example, most tourists go to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, but there are other waterfront areas where you can enjoy even more splendid views of the Hong Kong skyline: we recommend the Western Caolun waterfront, or the Kwun Tong waterfront, with its impressive design.

Shopping

Hong Kong is famous for shopping, and there are many malls, luxury brand boutiques as well as flea markets. Fashion is extremely important in Hong Kong, and the right place to get a feel for current trends is GOD: this "lifestyle store" is located in the prestigious Causeway Bay area. GOD is an acronym that stands for "Goods of Desire," and the store has become famous for its latest fashion offerings. A completely different aspect of shopping in Hong Kong can be experienced in the Mongkok area in Caolun. Mongkok reflects everything you expect from Hong Kong: streets crowded with signs, food stalls and vendors. At the Mongkok Bird Market you can observe an ancient, fascinating Chinese tradition: older Hong Kongers like to collect birds not by their looks but by their voices, and they go to this market where birds can be bought and traded. Here they also chat and exchange many life stories with their birds on their arms, just as in Western culture one might socialize while walking the dog. As with many markets, it is best to arrive early in the morning to experience it at its best.

How to get around

The Hong Kong International Airport is located west of Caolun. To reach Caolun from the airport, the quickest option is to take the Airport Express train from the airport, which leaves every 10 minutes and will take you to your destination in 24 minutes. Getting around Hong Kong is easy, as the city boasts one of the safest and most efficient public transportation networks in the world. The Octopus Card is the local version of London's Oyster Card, and with it paying for public transportation will be quick and easy. Hong Kong's subway network is called the MTR, and it is the best way to get around the city. There are also many ferries connecting Caolun to Hong Kong Island and the Peripheral Islands. In Hong Kong there are double-decker buses just like in London, carrying passengers to the city's busiest districts since 1904. Sit on the top floor and enjoy the view as you pass through Hong Kong's busiest streets!
